Wayland High Principal Headed to Brighton

Wayland High School Principal Pat Tutwiler is resigning to return to his roots in education at Brighton High School.

According to an email he sent to colleagues at WHS, Tutwiler was contacted by Boston Public Schools two weeks ago and accepted an invitation to discuss a position there. He was offered the position of headmaster at Brighton High School, and he accepted.

"In my tenure as an educator, there is no decision over which I agonized more," Tutwiler wrote in his email. "Wayland has been extremely good to me and I sincerely hope that the school community believes that I've given my all to the kids and to you."

Tutwiler explained that he began his career in an urban school district and has "long contemplated returning."

"This particular situation, albeit untimely, is the right challenge in the right place for me in my career," he wrote.

Superintendent Paul Stein and Tutwiler are engaged in a search for an interim replacement, according to Tutwiler's announcement. He said it's too late in the season to put together a full search for a permanent replacement.

They hope to have someone in place by Aug. 1, the announcement reads, and the high school's Assistant Principal Allison Mizoguchi and Dean of Students Scott Parseghian will provide administrative continuity in the meantime.

Tutwiler plans to remain on campus until July 12, he wrote. He will also work with the interim individual in the days ahead.

"Wayland High School is an incredible place!," Tutwiler wrote. "You are incredible people, and I have the utmost respect for you and the work you have and will continue to do with students and families.

"I'll take with me some really wonderful memories of our time together and lessons learned. I am forever indebted."
