Wayland Voters Line Up Before the Polls Opened

Turnout has been a bit of a surprise in Wayland.

Wayland Town Clerk Lois Toombs said voters were waiting at the door when polls opened Tuesday at 7 a.m.

"We're are having a busier election than we anticipated," Toombs said. "It's good. It's been steady all day."

Toombs said that, as of about 2 p.m., nearly 2,000 of Wayland's 9,262 registered voters had cast ballots. The breakdown by precinct was more than 500 each from precincts 1 and 4, about 445 from precinct 2, and about 400 from precinct 3.

"The building is very busy," Toombs said of Wayland Town Building where her office and the polls for precincts 1 and 4 are located. "We've had a lot of questions. It's very steady."

She also said that the heat did not appear to be a problem at Wayland Middle School, where precincts 2 and 3 are voting in the un-air conditioned gymnasium.

"They have the fans going and it seems to be OK," Toombs said.
