Passenger Seriously Injured After Route 9 Crash in Wellesley

The driver of the vehicle appeared to have struck a large tree off the side of the road.

A female passenger was airlifted to Tufts Medical Center in Boston early this morning after she sustained serious injuries in a crash on Route 9 in Wellesley. 

The one-car crash occurred just after 1 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Route 9 east and Woodbine Road, according to Wellesley Police. 

When Wellesley Police and Fire crews arrived scene Sunday morning, they found a Chrysler 300 sedan with heavy front-end damage and the passenger of the vehicle seriously trapped inside the car.

Using the Jaws of Life, firefighters spent roughly 20 minutes extricating the passenger from the car, police said.

The male driver was out of the car by the time crews arrived on scene, Wellesley Police said, and sustained only minor injuries.

Realizing the severity of the passenger's injuries, Wellesley Police secured a landing zone for a medical helicopter at the St. James Church parking lot, near the corner of Route 9 and Lexington Road.

Route 9 east was shut down while crews handled the crash scene, police said.

The department's accident reconstruction team spent roughly four hours on the scene investigating the crash, police said. At this time, police believe the car veered off the road, hit a curb and then hit a large tree. 

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation, police said.
