Wellesley College Subject Of Justice Department Investigation

Wellesley College is among several New England colleges facing a Justice Department probe.

WELLESLEY, MA — Wellesley College is among several New England colleges facing a Justice Department probe related to their early-decision admission practices.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the school, along with Amherst College, Middlebury College, Wesleyan University, and Williams College, have received letters notifying them of the investigation and asking them to preserve emails and messages concerning deals they may have with other schools about swapping the names of admitted students.

The department is likely investigating whether the schools share the names of their accepted early-admission applicants to enforce the rules of the program. In most early-admission programs, applicants agree to attend the school if they accepted through the program.
