Wellesley PD Promotes Officer To Sergeant, Welcomes 2 Officers

Sergeant Griffin is a seven-year veteran of the Wellesley Police Department and is one of 120 police officers who hold a DRE certification.

WELLESLEY, MA — The Wellesley Police Department is celebrating a few changes to its ranks.

Wellesley Police Officer William Griffin was promoted to sergeant. The Wellesley Select Board made the promotion earlier in the month. Two new officers also have joined the department recently as well.

Sergeant Griffin is a seven-year veteran of the Wellesley Police Department. Before he joined the Wellesley Police Department, Griffin served as a police officer with the Northeastern University Police Department in Boston for several years. He holds an M.S. in Criminal Justice Leadership from Northeastern as well.

In the Wellesley Police Department, Griffin served as a field training officer, background investigator, firearms instructor and drug recognition expert (DRE). He is one of approximately 120 police officers who hold a DRE certification in the Commonwealth. Griffin is also assigned to the Department’s Crisis Intervention Team as well as recently joining the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Counsel Tactical Bike Unit. The bike unit works with other cities and towns at large scale incidents throughout eastern Massachusetts.

Griffin had endeavored to make a positive difference in the community. He has fostered relationships with community members and has often made time during his patrol shift to visit with elderly residents who live alone and do not have family members nearby, the department said.

The two new officers coming to the Wellesely Police Department are Brian Collins and Domenic Scopa who recently graduated from the Randolph Police Academy and are in field training with senior Wellesley Police Officers.

Collins and Scopa were dispatchers in the Wellesley Police Department before they were hired as police officers, making them extremely familiar with the community. Collins worked for the Dover Police Department, and Scopa was a college English professor prior to joining the department.
