Wellesley Police: Citizens Bank "Skimmed" Over Weekend

Some customers' card information may have been captured by skimming device discovered on ATM.

Do you bank at the Linden Street Citizens Bank? Were you there over the weekend? Police say you should keep an eye on your bank statement.

Over the weekend, Wellesley Police found a skimming device attached to the ATM at the Linden Street Citizens Bank location over the weekend. These devices often fit over the card slot on an ATM, and scan a person's card as they attempt to use the machine normally.

People who set up such devices often pair them with a camera or similar device capable of capturing the customer's PIN number, which allows them to duplicate a card.

The Wellesley Police Department's Lieutenant Marie Cleary told Patch that several customers have contacted police to report fraudulent charges on their account, and many more have contacted the bank itself. Some of these customers found out when their cards were declined in the days after the skimmer was found.

If Citizens Bank customers find fraudulent charges on their accounts after the incident, they are advised to contact both the bank and the police.

"If there is more than one ATM, make sure that on both machines the space where you put your card in looks the same," Cleary advised. "Where you put your card should not be protruding."

She added that it is a good idea to use the same locations, to be aware of what the machines should look like. Banking customers would also be wise to keep an eye on their statements often to be aware of activity.
