WELLESLEY, MA — Michael Thorbjornsen showed the world he could hold his own in the U.S. Open, as the 17-year-old from Wellesley shot an even-par 71 in his first round of his professional golf career Thursday. After a little bit of a rocky start, starting 3-over-par on his first four holes, Thorbjornsen didn't let the moment become too big. He responded with four birdies and only bogeyed once more, giving himself some room to work as the tournament progresses to its second round Friday. His 71 was tied with golf superstar Dustin Johnson.

Thorbjornsen hit the tee again at 7:18 a.m. Friday, and through three holes, was 1-under-par, birdying on on the first hole. He ended up finishing the day 2-above-bar with a score of 73.

The Wellesley teen earned his right to compete in the same tournament as Tiger Woods, Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson by winning last year's U.S. Junior Amateur title. He's been training in Florida since for his U.S. Open debut.
