Amazon Fresh Out, New Grocery Store In, At Westborough Site

WESTBOROUGH, MA — Big Y will open a store at a Route 9 location where an Amazon Fresh grocery store had previously been planned.

Big Y announced it will open a location at the Speedway Plaza at 290 Turnpike Road in Westborough. The company also announced new locations in Westport and Brookfield, both in Connecticut.

Previously, an Amazon Fresh had been planned for the site. Planning Director Jenny Gingras told MetroWest Daily News that she has "never seen any communication for why that store never opened, but it's going to be a Big Y."

Amazon Fresh stores were scheduled to open in several locations in the state, including in Framingham, Saugus, and Billerica. However, so far, none of the stores have opened, MetroWest Daily News reported.

Company officials said last year that they would pause on expanding the number of stores, as its current locations have not performed as well as expected. The tech giant began rolling out the brick-and-mortar grocery stores three years ago, Grocery Dive reported.

Meanwhile, the Westborough Big Y could open as early as four to six months, according to the company.

"All of us at Big Y are excited about the opportunity to enter into these communities with our unique fresh and local foods along with our exceptional and knowledgeable employees," Big Y CEO Michael D'Amour said in a statement. "These locations fit nicely within our current store footprint.”

Big Y, based in Springfield, "is one of the largest independently owned supermarket chains in New England," with locations throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Other Big Y locations are under construction in Middletown, CT and Uxbridge. When the new stores are added, Big Y will have a total of 77.
