As a first-year student at Holy Cross, Cousy was a contributing member of the 1947 NCAA championship team. In the following years, he led the team to win two more NCAA tournaments and earned All-East and All-America honors.

He went on to play for many years with the Celtics, where he won six championships in seven seasons, led the league in assists for eight straight years, and was named the NBA's Most Valuable Player in 1957.

In 2019, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, for his contributions to American life both on and off the court. He was known for his civil rights advocacy and charity work in Central Massachusetts, the school said.
