A lack of lifeguards has become an issue throughout the state. The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation ramped up its recruiting efforts for lifeguards and swim instructors this year.

The DCR even offered incentives, like $750 in bonuses for those who work past Labor Day. But even so, some areas remain unguarded.
