Westborough Remembers Ruth Crowell Singer

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16.

Ruth Crowell Singer, 95, of Falmouth passed away on Nov. 7, 2013, at Sedgewood Commons with her sister Ann Buxton and her daughter Polly Crowell at her side.

Ruth was born on March 4, 1918 in Framingham, and was the oldest child of Donald Scott and Mildred (Fuller) Hayward. Ruth grew up on the family farm in Westborough, and graduated from Westborough High School in 1936. Ruth graduated from the Forsyth Training School for Dental Hygienists in 1938.

In 1941, Ruth and Baron Haubrich Crowell Jr. were married. They raised their children Peter and Polly in their hometown of Westborough. They moved to Miami, Fla. in 1964, where they enjoyed warm weather and the beauty of Biscayne Bay and the Florida Keys. Ruth was a dedicated volunteer at Miami Baptist Hospital.
Ruth returned to New England following Baron's passing to live at the family cottage on Lake Sunapee and to be near her family in New London, N.H. Ruth continued her volunteer work by providing pre-school dental instruction and by giving Hospice care.

In 1988, Ruth married Dr. John J. Singer Jr. of Hollis, N.H. They enjoyed some wonderful times with family and friends at Sunapee and had interesting travels together, including special events with Jack's World War II bomber group.

Ruth was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease at age 80 and was able to live the cottage with Jack's diligent care and that of the Lake Sunapee Health Care Services until 2011, when she moved to live near her daughter in Maine.

Ruth was predeceased by her husband Baron H. Crowell Jr. in 1977 and by her son Peter Oren Crowell who passed away in 2009.

She is survived by her husband, John J. Singer Jr., of Hollis, N.H.; her sister, Ann H. Buxton of Falmouth, Maine; her brother, Wendell F. Hayward of Ocala, Fla., her daughter, Polly Crowell of Falmouth, Maine; her nieces, Susan Hayward of Ocala, Fla., Lynda Hayward of Ankara, Turkey and Karen Morgenroth of Ocala, Fla.; her grandson, Peter Baron Crowell and his wife Tracy of Springfield, N.H., and grandson Benjamin Roland Crowell and his wife Abigail of New London, N.H.; and her great-grandchildren, Peter, Hunter, Piper, Corbin and Hadley.

Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the West Part Cemetery, 27 County Road, New London, N.H. Arrangements are under the care of Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland.

Donations to support Alzheimer's research, 383 US Route One #2C, Scarborough, ME 04074, and the work of Hospice, 180 U.S. 1 #1, Scarborough, ME 04074, and Lake Sunapee Community Health Care Services, 107 Newport Road, New London, NH 03257, would be most fitting in Ruth's memory.
