Despite Statewide Loss, Gomez Beats Markey in Westford

Westford's member of Congress had praise for Markey following the announcement that he won.

Despite a race that flew under the radar for many Massachusetts residents, almost one in three Westford voters came out to the polls in Tuesday’s U.S. Senate Special Election.

Although now U.S. Senator-elect Ed Markey won handily over Republican opponent Gabriel Gomez statewide, in Westford Gomez had a slight edge, winning the town by just under 600 votes in a race that saw 4,808, or 30.33% of Westford voters, turnout to the polls.

Gomez also won all precincts according to unofficial results from the Town Clerk’s office, ranging from his win in Precinct 4 by just 32 votes to winning Precincts 1, 2 and 3 by over 100 votes.

Third party candidate Richard Heos had nine votes town wide, and there were 16 write-in votes.

In Westford’s neighboring towns, Markey won in Acton (3,420 to 1,692), Carlisle (919 to 685) and Groton (1,225 to 1,215), but lost in Chelmsford (4,381 to 3,384) and Tyngsborough (1,382 to 752).

Westford’s member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Niki Tsongas (D-Lowell),  was pleased with the election results, noting her praise for Markey on issues they faced together on the Natural Resources Committee.

“He has one of the most productive and impressive track records in Congress and has played a leading role in advancing issues important to Massachusetts families and businesses,” said Tsongas. “Respect for him runs deep on both sides of the aisle, which will enable him to hit the ground running and make an immediate impact on the major issues facing our nation. “
