March Students Of The Month At Nashoba Valley Tech

WESTFORD, MA — Each month Nashoba Valley Tech honors a student or students of the month for excelling at the high school. This year the school is recognizing Abigail Bernier of Chelmsford and Alyssa Mayer of Pepperell for their performances in March.

"Abby has shown through her work over the two years I have had her that she gives her best effort. Her school spirit is second to none and was demonstrated in her participation in Virtual Spirit Week photos," said Math instructor David McCloskey, who nominated her for student of the month.

Abigail or "Abby," daughter of Jeff and Kerry Bernier, is a senior in the Early Childhood Education program and works at Roudenbush Children’s Center in Westford through Nashoba Tech’s Cooperative Education program.

She is a high-honors student and was inducted as a junior into both the National Honor Society and the National Technical Honor Society. Abby is a freshman mentor and is active in the Viking Theatre Company.

Earlier this school year, she was certified as a nanny by the International Nanny Association, the largest such organization in the world. Abby said she has her eye on attending Westfield State University in the fall to major in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education.

Alyssa Mayer is a senior in the Design & Visual Communications program.

"She has been a top student for four years and is always willing to take on extra projects," said Design & Visual Communications instructor Derik Rochon, who nominated her. "She works hard and helps her fellow students in the program. She is one of the editors for the yearbook and even in this time of a pandemic, she is working hard to get the book done. I cannot imagine a student more worthy of this honor."

At the spring 2019 Skills USA District Competition Alyssa won a gold medal in Advertising Design.

She's also a high-honors student. She was part of the Design & Visual Communications team that designed a marketing campaign for the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education called “aMAzing Educators,” which focused on the ways teachers have a positive impact on the lives of their students and the community, both inside the classroom and out.

Alyssa is co-designing and laying out the Class of 2020 yearbook, a task made more difficult by the closure of schools due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"Although the school being closed has greatly increased the challenge, we are still working very hard to complete it from home," she said. "It is a very big and challenging task, but I am confident that the final product will be worth the massive amount of effort."
