UPDATED: Two Dead in Overnight Fire in Groton

The Westford Fire Department provided mutual aid.

GROTON, MA - A fire that broke out in a Whiley Road home in Groton Thursday night claimed the lives of two people in Groton.

The victims have not been identified, but were both adults, according to a press release.

When fire and police arrived at the scene around 11:30 p.m., they found intense fire and heat at the home as well as two vehicles in the driveway indicating at least two people were home.

WHDH reported the victims were found on the first floor, but it was unclear whether they were trying to escape the house at the time. No one else was home at the time of the blaze.

“On behalf of the entire community, we offer our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of these two victims,” Groton Fire Chief Steele McCurdy said.

The Westford Fire Department provided mutual aid at the two-alarm blaze, according to Westford Fire Capt. Mark Valcourt. Westford sent an engine and four firefighters who were on the scene for about three hours, he said.

Other departments that assisted included Pepperell, Ayer, Littleton and Dunstable.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Groton fire and police departments as well as state police assigned to the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Office of Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan.
