According to the town website, the project uses a spray formula containing the sumithrin pesticide, a synthetic pyrethroid that that the EPA classifies as slightly toxic. Mosquito control using sumithrin do not pose a significant risk to people or pets due to the low toxicity of the pesticide and the small amount used. Though, with any pesticide, people should minimize their exposure to it. If neighbors see a spray truck approaching, it is advised to go indoors for several minutes, while the spray dissipates. Neighbors are also advised to close any windows that face the street. Beekeepers do not need to take any special precautions because spraying begins after dusk.

Information regarding the schedule and areas to be sprayed is available via a recorded message at 781-893-5759 and at the project’s website. Any questions related to the spraying or mosquitoes can be directed to the East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project at 781-899-5730.
