Suffolk County Man is Massachusetts' First West Nile Fatality

The risk for West Nile virus has been elevated to high in Boston, Chelsea, Revere and Winthrop.

Massachusetts health officials announced the state’s first West Nile virus-related death of the season on Tuesday. According to officials, the victim lived in Suffolk County. They did not reveal an exact location.

The man, in his 60s, was hospitalized after contracting the virus, but later died. Officials said the man likely contracted the virus in the Suffolk County area.

The risk for West Nile virus has been elevated to high in Boston, Chelsea, Revere and Winthrop.

“Residents need to continue to take steps to protect themselves against mosquito bites: use insect repellant, cover up, and avoid outdoor activities at dusk and after nightfall when mosquitoes are at their most active,” State Public Health Veterinarian Dr. Catherine Brown said in the statement.

A second man in Suffolk County, also in his 60s, has tested positive for the disease. He remains hospitalized at this time.

West Nile virus is most commonly transmitted to humans by mosquitoes. Five cases have been confirmed across the state this year, including the announced death.
