A 12-inch cannonball was found by a fisherman before being detonated by Massachusetts State Police on a Boston beach.
The artillery piece, discovered in South Boston near Castle Island, may be Civil War-era ammo, according to WHDH.

The pitted and rusty projectile was buried under a sand berm at Carson Beach on Thursday before the state police bomb squad conducted a controlled detonation. State officials received permission from the U.S. Navy before carrying out the blast.
The cannonball, which police said was likely inert, contained unidentified jet black material.
