Tuskegee Airman Among Veterans Day Salute at Sophia Snow Place

Sophia Snow Place independent living has 18 veterans living at its West Roxbury location.

 

A Tuskegee Airman was among the veterans honored during a "Salute to Our Veterans" event at Sophia Snow Place.

George Giddings and his wife, Ethel, now live at Sophia Snow Place in West Roxbury, and were actually among the first 12 residents to put a down payment on moving into the independent living facility before it was built.

But well before they moved to West Roxbury, George was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, a popular name for the first African-American pilots in US military history. They flew during World War II. Geddings was a student at Fisk University and enlisted in the US Air Corps after breakout of the war. 

George made it through the war, and the couple married on February 5, 1945, and had three children together.

The Sophia Snow Place event was held on Nov. 9, and was an evening dedicated to the 18 residents who served our country during World War II, the Korean War and beyond.

There was also themed music, videos, and a display of residents' military memorabilia.
