2020 U.S. Census Results: The Changing Demographics Of Wilmington

WILMINGTON, MA — The last 10 years have marked a dramatic shift in the demographic makeup of the United States, with a marked shrinkage of the white population and the rapid growth of the Hispanic community.

These changes were reflected in Wilmington, where the white population fell by 2 percent while most other racial and ethnic groups grew.

Wilmington reported particularly large growth in its Asian population, adding over 500 residents of Asian descent. The Black non-Hispanic population grew by more than 80 percent to over 300 residents in 2020.

Like the country as a whole, Wilmington had significant growth in its Hispanic community: the town's Hispanic or Latino population grew by over two-thirds.

Wilmington also showed an increase in the number of people who identified themselves as multiracial, although the reasons are complex. Experts say the increase reflects changes in the way people identify themselves, changes in the wording of census forms and the number of children born to parents of mixed races or ethnicities.

Wilmington's population reporting two or more races tripled to over 800 residents.
