WILMINGTON, MA - If you’ve been driving around town this week you may have noticed the newly installed flashing yellow signals at intersections along Rte. 38. Wilmington is receiving this new technology at seven intersections in town.
These new flashing yellow signals are aimed at improving safety for left turns at traffic signals around town.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation began installing these signals at intersections in cities and towns across the Commonwealth last summer.

Approximately 25 percent of all crashes at traffic signals in Massachusetts have been attributed to left turning vehicles, according to the MassDOT.
Wilmington’s installation of this lights is part of a retrofit project MassDOT is undertaking to convert all eligible traffic signals on the state highway system. These projects will take place at more than 350 traffic signals, covering more than 140 cities and towns and every district in the state.

Construction on this project is started last summer and is expected to last two to three years.
