WILMINGTON, MA — A staff member working in the Wildwood Early Childhood Center's Classroom 7 grabbed, held and shoved students with their foot in the 2020-2021 school year and prior years, an investigator hired by the district found.

The staff member also "used restraints as defined under Massachusetts law" and did not report doing so, as is required, attorney Patrick Hanley wrote in an executive summary of the report.

The full report is available at the end of this article.

Hanley did not find any evidence that the second staff member in the classroom abused any children, but he found "it implausible that the second staff member never saw the first staff member grab, hold, or shove students with the staff member's foot," he wrote.

In a supplemental section, the attorney said he found no evidence that the school's principal saw the staff member grab, hold and shove students

"She took each investigation related to the staff member seriously and followed each one through diligently," Hanley wrote.

Hanley's executive summary does not identify anyone involved in the investigation.

Hanley took questions Monday from a group of parents and attorneys for parents. Questions focused in particular on whether allegations of abuse should have been reported to the state Department of Children and Families, why they weren't and whether the full investigative report could be made available in a redacted form.

Superintendent Glenn Brand said the district is switching from a district-led training on mandated reporting of suspected abuse and neglect to an expanded online training delivered by Middlesex Children's Advocacy.
