WILMINGTON, MA - A Wilmington company has issued a recall of breakfast sandwiches manufactured for Starbucks because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Progressive Gourmet Inc. of Wilmington, MA, announced the recall late last week of its 6-ounce packages of Sausage, Egg, and Cheddar Cheese on English muffin breakfast sandwiches manufactured for Starbucks Coffee Co. because of that risk.

Progressive Gourmet is located at 330 Ballardvale St. in Wilmington.

Starbucks stores which may have sold this product are located in the states of Arkansas, Texas and Oklahoma. Only those 250 stores are impacted and the product was sold on March 3 and March 4, according to a statement from Progressive Gourmet. The product has been removed from these locations.

Progressive Gourmet says the company determined the possible contamination after routine testing revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes on a contact surface within its production facility.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, according to the statement from the FDA. Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, however, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.

No illnesses have been reported due to this recall and the company says it's working closely with the FDA and the Massachusetts Department of Health to continue to investigate the source of the contamination.

Anyone who may have purchased 6-ounce packages of the sandwich are urged to return them for a full refund. Consumers with questions can contact the company Monday through Friday (EST) fro 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 1-800-224-7630.
