Wilmington DPW Announces Modification To Middlesex Avenue Closure

The street will not re-open as a single-lane road next week. However, it will re-open as a 2-lane road a month ahead of schedule.

WILMINGTON, MA —The Wilmington Department of Public Works on Tuesday announced modifications to its Middlesex Avenue (Route 62) road closure that will allow the roadway to open to 2-way traffic sooner than expected.

The project, which began last month and involves the replacement of a failing culvert conveying water to Lubbers Brook, had been scheduled to have a full closure of Middlesex Avenue —between Jefferson Avenue and North Street —through August 17.

The stretch of road then was scheduled to operate as a single-lane roadway until Sept. 27, before accommodating 2 lanes of traffic beginning on Sept. 28. Detours have been in place during the construction.

But on Tuesday, the Wilmington DPW said that it was extending the full closure of Middlesex Avenue until Aug. 29. However, on Aug. 30, the roadway is expected to once again support 2-way traffic, nearly a month ahead of schedule.

"This modification has been made to reduce congestion to the area anticipated from single-lane alternating traffic, reduce public safety response times, improve access to area businesses by reducing queuing, help with September school bus routing, reduce conflicts with the at-grade train crossing in North Wilmington and provide a safer work environment for the contractor to complete the project in a more timely manner," the Wilmington DPW said in a statement.
