Wilmington Heroes: Recognize More People Making A Difference

WILMINGTON, MA — The adage 'not all heroes wear capes' is more apparent now than ever. Countless people are putting themselves in danger by simply showing up to work in essential roles for our communities, risking possible infection from the new coronavirus.

At the height of the outbreak in Massachusetts, over 100 Wilmington residents had the virus. Dozens of residents have died.

Doctors, nurses, police and grocery store workers alike are just some of the professions with a high potential for exposure to the virus. Patch wants to recognize as many of these heroes as possible. Wilmington residents have made multiple nominations:

'Remarkable, Caring Woman': Wilmington Hero Caring For Veterans

Wilmington's Amanda Assenza, a certified nursing assistant, is caring for coronavirus patients at a veterans hospital.

'Very Caring And Considerate': Wilmington Hero At Animal Hospital

Wilmington's Laurie Hayes works at a veterinary hospital providing emergency care during the coronavirus outbreak.

'Risks His Own Health' Wilmington Hero Firefighter/EMT

Wilmington's Derek Koster is a Woburn fire lieutenant and an E.M.T. He 'treats everyone with respect no matter what," his wife said.

'Working 12 Hour Shifts': Wilmington Patch Hero Dietitian

"People never think dietitians are first responders," Marina Otis' aunt said, but they are.

'Dedicated And Brave': Wilmington Hero Nurse

Wilmington's Vicky Walkling doesn't think she deserves special recognition, but her husband doesn't agree.

We know you've encountered or seen them around town, and we want to help recognize as many of these heroes as possible. If the heroism happened a while ago, at the height of the outbreak, that's okay.
