Wilmington Winter SOLEstice 5K Run/Walk Is Saturday

WILMINGTON, MA — Though online registration has closed, there still are opportunities to sign up for Saturday's 5th annual Winter SOLEstice 5K Run/Walk in Wilmington.

The event, organized by the Sole Sisters Running Club (SSRC), begins at 10 a.m. on the Wilmington Town Common, located at 142 Middlesex Ave.

The race costs $40 to enter, and registration —and bib pickup for those already registered — takes place from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Wilmington Fourth of July Building, 142 Middlesex Ave.

There also is a chance to register, and pick up bibs, on race day from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in the cafeteria at Wilmington High School, 159 Church St. Only cash and checks are accepted.

The course is USATF certified and prizes will be awarded to the top three overall females and males in the race. There also will be age-group awards given to the winners in the different divisions: 18 and under, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60+

SSRC, founded in 2013 in Wilmington, is an all-women's running club that includes runners from Wilmington Tewksbury Andover, Billerica, Reading and other local communities.

"We are a diverse community of runners of all abilities," Sole Sisters' mission statement reads. "We strive to share our love of competitive and recreational running through training, group running and participation in races."

On the website for Saturday's race, there is an opportunity to contribute to the annual SSRC high school scholarship fund.

The fund awards graduating female seniors who participated in cross country or track throughout high school. Applications are chosen based on merit, a person's contribution to the sport and an essay.

Saturday's race day forecast for Wilmington calls for a mostly cloudy day with late-morning and early-afternoon temperatures ranging from 28 degrees and 33 degrees.
