Dog Killed in Accident in Winchester
At 8:05 a.m. on May 7, Winchester Police responded to Eaton Street for a report of a dog struck by a vehicle, according to a police report. A witness told police that she saw a woman speeding up Eaton to try and avoid waiting in traffic, when a dog ran out into the street and was hit by the driver before she could stop, according to the report. The dog was dead when police arrived on scene, according to the report. The dog's owner told police that she left her dogs in the backyard for a few minutes, and when she called them back in only one came back, according to the report. That's when she went outside and saw a woman in the street crying near her dog, according to the report. The dog was a gray Havanese named Remy, according to the report.

[Editor's note: Winchester resident Karen Lynch added this information about the incident that was not in the police report: "The driver did, in fact, stop and she stayed for quite some time. She was sobbing and inconsolable, and finally did move on, but only after a warm hug from the dog's owner. Possibly the legal definition of a "hit-and-run" means the driver was not at the scene when an officer arrived—in which case, it is true. An officer arrived after the driver had left, but we had not called an officer immediately because we had been trying to reach Animal Control. She didn't leave early. We called the police late. It was a heart-breaking and unfortunate accident, but at least not a hit-and-run.
"Incidentally, the Eaton Street and Stevens Street residents are in the process of appealing to the town to assess the traffic situation on our cut-through streets. The sheer number of cars and speed with which many of them travel up and down our streets is setting the stage for another, possibly more tragic, accident."]
