Mayor Says City is Ready for the Snowstorm and Releases Information

ROUNDUP FOR RESIDENTS

Mayor Scott Galvin says the City is well prepared for predictions of 8-12 inches of snow to fall in the area starting early Friday morning, February 25th and winding down in the evening hours.

DPW crews are preparing to pretreat roadways and preparing equipment. The City has issued an emergency parking ban, effective tonight at midnight until 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 26th, this is to allow City plow and sand crews to properly clean and treat city streets.

That means no on-street parking, either side of the street, during this time period. Off street parking will be available in all municipal lots across the City, (see list attached hereto), excluding school parking lots. All vehicles must be removed from city lots by 8:00 a.m., Saturday, February 26th.

Woburn Police Chief Robert Rufo Woburn Fire Chief Clark Kenton, and Woburn DPW Superintendent Jay Duran report assembling additional resources, including sanders and plows, extra traffic units, extra ambulance and an emergency center that will be operated out of the dispatch area. Please dial 911 only in the case of an emergency.

Due to the impending snowstorm for Friday February 25th, Thursdays Trash and Recycling Route will NOT be picked up for the week of 2/21. Friday’s Trash and Recycling Route will be picked-up on Saturday February 26th due to the one-day Holiday delay.

Mayor Galvin urges people to monitor the storm and heed warnings. As always, he said, people should put together their emergency kits, which should include flashlights, batteries, bottled water and charge all cell phones. Also people planning to use generators should make sure they know how to use them safely.

Fire Hydrants: There are thousands of fire hydrants across the City. Winter storms can often hide fire hydrants under a large mountain, placing precious time and lives in danger in the event of a fire. The City asks residents who are able to assist with keeping the fire hydrant closest to their residence or business clear of snow. The Fire Department requests a three-foot clearance on all sides for best access to hydrants. The Woburn Fire Department will also be out there clearing hydrants, but is extremely grateful for any and all assistance that residents are able to provide during winter storms.

Also, don’t forget that safe sidewalks benefit the entire community. The same request is asked of businesses and residents when it comes to sidewalks. Some helpful guidelines include efforts to make path wide enough for someone using a wheelchair, walker or stroller. Clear ramps at corners and sidewalks.

Use ice melter, but not sand (sand gets into street drains and can be expensive to clean up).

Consider helping neighbors who may have difficulty clearing their walk.
