Five Police Incidents That Had Woburn Talking

A look back at the week in police news in Woburn.

Aug. 19—At 3:21 p.m., police were dispatched to the Target parking lot for a report of a small child asleep in a car. Police found the child secured in a baby seat in the back seat of the locked vehicle. The windows were rolled up and the child was sweating, reported police. The officer ran the license plate to determine ownership of the vehicle and requested a towing company to the scene to open the vehicle. After finding the owners name, Target employees paged the woman, who apologized and said she did not plan to be away from the car for so long. A report was filed with the state Department of Children and Families.

Aug. 14—At 2:32 p.m., police responded to a report of a shoplifting at Kohl’s. According to police, two females were seen by employees as they picked out items in the misses’ and juniors’ departments and brought them to the fitting room. Employees told police the females left the fitting room with full purses and no merchandise. The pair was stopped by employees. A 20-year-old woman was summonsed to Woburn District Court for shoplifting by concealing merchandise. A 13-year-old girl was summonsed for larceny over $250. Police reported the two females were found with almost $600 in merchandise.

Aug. 20—Members of Melanie Melanson's family are convinced that the teenager's body is not located in the woods near  after 

 

Aug. 20—At 1:47 p.m., a police officer observed a man pacing near hedges and then “peeking” above the hedges as the cruiser drove by on Mountain Street. The officer stopped to speak to the man, who said he was waiting for his brother because they were going to go running. The officer was patrolling the area because of recent house-breaks and began looking around to see if anyone else was in the area. Police found a tire iron near a home and confiscated it.

 

Aug. 23—At 5:34 p.m., officers were called to Granny Smith Lane and Elm Street for a report of a fight in a vehicle. According to police, a man and a woman were arguing in a car and began scratching at each other. Police said the friends were uncooperative with police and said they did not want to pursue the issue. The woman was given a ride to a bus stop and the man left the scene in his own vehicle.
