POLICE LOG: Man Arrested for Second DUI

The following is an excerpt from the  log. Please note that this is a sampling of activity in the log, not a complete account. We report all arrests included in the daily police log.

Aug. 15 – At 3:36 p.m., police responded to a two-car crash on Warren Avenue. According to police, a car attempted to drive around another, when the car re-entered the travel lane, causing a collision. Richard Scott Nelson, 42, of 80 Cambridge St. Apt. #12, was arrested and charged with operating while under the influence of alcohol (second offense). Police reported that when the officer arrived at the scene of the crash, Nelson’s car was blocking traffic and most of the front of his car was over the double yellow line. The officer raised his voice to get Nelson’s attention and asked him to roll down the window. When Nelson complied, the officer reported the smell of alcohol was so strong, the patrolman reflexively stepped back. Police asked Nelson to exit the vehicle, which he reportedly had trouble doing. Police said Nelson was asked if he had been drinking, due to the odor of alcohol, and he said no. Nelson also refused to perform field sobriety tests, said police. Nelson was taken into custody. During the booking process, Nelson repeatedly asked for a lawyer, including when officers asked him if he was right or left-handed. Police told Nelson his request for a lawyer would be granted.

Aug. 15 –

At 4:56 a.m., police responded to a two-car crash on Mishawum Road at Commerce Way. According to police, both drivers had a green light, but signs state the turning car must yield to oncoming traffic. A witness reported that the turning car cut in front of oncoming traffic, causing the collision. That driver was given a warning for failure to yield to while turning.

At 10:49 a.m., a Melrose man reported an altercation with another man on Salem Street. According to police, the victim did not want to press charges.

At 12:45 p.m., police responded to Wildwood Avenue for a report of a car hitting a pole. According to police, the driver went off the road and struck a utility pole. Police reported there were no skid marks on the street. The driver was taken to Lahey Clinic.

At 2:04 p.m., police were called to Autozone on Main Street for a report of a theft. According to police, an employee reportedly used a customer credit card to steal almost $100. Police said the employee had admitted to the theft and was terminated.

At 4:05 p.m., police were called to a four-car crash in front of the Woburn Mall and West Marine. According to police, the initial crash occurred when a car turning into West Marine was struck by a car going straight. The collision forced the turning car to strike two others traveling straight on Mishawum Road.  

At 8:30 p.m., a Salem Street woman reported someone threw an object at her home, damaging a floodlight. Police reported the floodlight was hanging from the home by its wires.

At 9:28 p.m., police were dispatched to Lexington Street for a report of someone calling for help. For complete story, click here.
