POLICE LOG: Phone Scam With Threat Against Family Member Reported

The following is an excerpt from the Woburn Police Department log. Please note that this is a sampling of activity in the log, not a complete account. We report all arrests included in the daily police log. 

Featured Call of the Day

At 11:25 a.m. police responded to Dragon Court locations for a report of a threatening phone call. Caller said he had received a call from a restricted cell phone and when he answered a man with a heavy accent told him he had his brother with a shotgun pointed at his head. The male went on to say that he had just been involved in a motor accident with his brother and that he needed him to send money.

The caller told police he asked the man to describe his brother and his car and at that point another man came on the line, yelling obscenities, and asked for his name. At that point the victim told police he hung up the phone. He then called his brother and checked on the well-being of him and his family and everyone was all right.

Police report states the call was likely from the west coast and was made on a throw-away phone. It also seems like the purpose was to get money out of the victim.

Other Incidents

March 3-

At 11:38 a.m. police responded to 55 Cedar Street apartment building on a call of property damage. When police arrived they met with the property manager who stated that at about 11:30 p.m. the night before a somebody turned on the firefighter water valve in the third floor stairway. They estimate the valve was turned on for about five minutes before firefighters turned it off. The water damaged apartments, ceilings, floors and the elevator on the first through third floors.

The property manager reported there is a group of individuals aged 18-22 years old that hang around and are know to have parties in various rooms with alcohol and marijuana. Police to check surveillance tapes.

Total damage estimated to be around $10,000.

At 7:14 p.m. police responded to a Salem Street location on a report of vandalism to the motor vehicle. The owner of the vehicle, a GMC flatbed tow truck, showed police the damage. The driver’s side window was shattered, a driver’s side tool  box door was ripped off and tools were thrown around the parking lot. Sugar had also been poured into the gas tank. Chains and tie-down straps were also missing.

The owner stated he has a small business and could not think of anyone who would be mad at him. Police are investigating the matter.

March 4-

At 12:31 p.m. police responded to a Border Street apartment for a call of harassment. The caller said her upstairs neighbor has been harassing her and that she has filed for two previous police reports documenting issues of harassment. Caller said her neighbor wakes up at 6 a.m. and bans on the floor and stairway outside her apartment door. She said she also sits in the hallway outside her door and makes negative comments about her laud enough for her to hear.

The caller said the harassment has forced her to move and she is currently in the process of packing and that the landlord refused to intervene. Police advised her of her rights and she said she would go to district court to seek and order against the neighbor.
