POLICE LOG: Woman Loses Thousands in Scam

The following is an excerpt from the  log. Please note that this is a sampling of activity in the log, not a complete account. We report all arrests included in the daily police log.

Aug. 30 – At 1:13 p.m., a Warren Avenue woman reported a telephone scam. According to police, the woman was telephoned and informed that she was on a list to win $1 million dollars—if she sent money to the company in the Philippines. Police reported that the woman sent varying amounts of money, between $1,500 and $5,800, a total of 15 times. The woman realized she was scammed and reported the incident to police. The reporting officer said the woman told him that the company warned her not to tell anyone, or she would be removed from the million-dollar list.

Aug. 29 –

At 11:01 a.m., police were dispatched to Middlesex Street for a report of a stolen vehicle. According to police, a woman’s car was taken during the early morning hours. Police investigated the theft, and learned that the car was involved in a minor car crash in Lawrence that morning. Later, the car was returned to the owner after the suspect, who was known to the family, was hospitalized for chest pains and the car was towed away. A woman’s purse was missing from the car, which included several credit cards and a Pandora bracelet with sentimental value.

At 3:08 p.m., a 33-year-old Lynn man was summonsed to Woburn District Court for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license (subsequent offense) and improper turn. According to police, an officer was exiting the Woburn Mall parking lot, when the driver took a left turn from the right turn only lane. The officer stopped the car on Mishawum Road and the driver said he was unfamiliar with the area. Police learned the man did not have a valid driver’s license.

Aug. 30 –

At 9:17 a.m., a Woburn business reported receiving threats from a former employee. According to police, a third party informed an employee that a specific threat was made toward her. Police advised the woman to contact WPD if any contact was made by the former employee.

At 12:36 p.m., a Woburn man reported someone had broken into his home three times recently and stolen items. The man told police that he believed that the items—cash and a change bucket—were misplaced, but when speaking to family members about it, he determined that they were stolen. The man told police that there is damage near a window and that the suspect may have gained entry through it. A Playstation 3 gaming system, two controllers and two games were also stolen, reported police.

At 3:24 p.m., police responded to Cranes Court for a report of an industrial accident. According to police, a worker lost the tip of his finger while using a compression machine. The man was taken to Lahey Clinic.

At 4:07 p.m., police were dispatched to a breaking and entering in the past on Eastern Avenue. According to police, an iPod, a flatscreen TV, two laptops, a BluRay player, a printer and a computer were all stolen from the home.

At 5:25 p.m., police responded to a two-car accident on Bedford Road at Willow Street. According to police, one car drove through a red light, causing the collision. One driver was issued a warning for failure to stop at a red light and failure to have license in possession. There were no reported injuries.

At 5:38 p.m., police were called to a two-car accident at the Woburn Mall. According to police, one driver admitted he was confused by the traffic light cycle and turned when he should not have. The driver was cited for failure to use care and caution.

At 5:37 p.m., a Hiawatha Road resident reported two stolen bicycles. According to police, the bikes were taken from the side yard on Monday.  

Aug. 31 –

At 5:25 a.m., police responded to a medical aid on Montvale Avenue. One man was taken to Winchester Hospital.
