Woburn Fire Department Receives Grant for High Tech Equipment

Local residents will be safer thanks to a $7,015 grant from Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company which funds a thermal imaging camera.

Thermal imaging cameras allow firefighters to “see” through smoke, darkness and other low visibility conditions.  This helps firefighters quickly locate victims trapped in a building during a fire. They can also play a major role in reducing property damage. With a thermal imager in hand, firefighters can locate hot spots inside walls and extinguish them before they spread. It also allows rescuers to better scout collapsed floors and other dangerous situations that could result in serious injury or death.

“Thermal imagers used to be considered a luxury, but now they’re a necessity because they can be used in so many different ways,” said Fire Chief Paul Tortolano. “We’re fortunate to have received this donation so we can ensure the safety of our firefighters and our community with this critical, life-saving piece of equipment.” 

Woburn Fire Department officials, firefighters, and executives from Fireman’s Fund will come together for a special public event where the grant will be presented and the equipment will be demonstrated:

• Location: Woburn Fire Department, 124 Main Street

The grant is part of a nationwide philanthropic program funded by Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company. Through the program, grants are awarded to fire service organizations for life-saving equipment, firefighter training and community education programs. Since 2004, Fireman’s Fund has awarded grants to more than 1,900 different organizations totaling more than $30 million – including more than $200,000 in Massachusetts.
