Woburn Mayor Thanks Participants In Senior Appreciation Dinner

The traditional indoor gathering was replaced with a grab-and-go meal from the City Hall parking lot.

Thanks to all of the Committee members, businesses and volunteers, who pitched in to transform the Mayor’s 43rd Annual Senior Appreciation Dinner on Sunday, Nov. 1, into an uplifting community event here in the City. We couldn’t hold our traditional large indoor gathering this year, but we had a lot of fun working together to provide a great Sunday grab ‘n go meal from City Hall parking lot for more than 600 seniors across the City.

Thanks to Dianne Mearls of Mayor Galvin’s Office, who worked closely with Harrows Chicken Pies of Reading and Table Talk Pies of Worcester to deliver seniors a dinner of a chicken pie, rolls, cranberry sauce and an apple pie. The to-go bags for seniors included a traditional gift, this year a flashlight, from Mayor Galvin and his wife Eileen.

Harrows gave us a more-than-generous discount for seniors and Table Talk was able to provide all of the desert pies at no cost, all to deliver a great meal and compassionate boost to Woburn’s seniors. Many thanks to both of these beloved, longtime local businesses. We couldn’t have done this without your total support.

The Mayor’s Committee suspended its collection of donations from small business owners this year, in recognition of environmental difficulties and the challenge of conducting business during a pandemic. We extend our best wishes and thanks for previous years donations, which helped fund a portion of this year’s event. Special thanks to Bill and Joyce Cummings and the Cummings Foundation as well as Mark and Brenda Schelzi, who stepped up to donate funds that were put to good use.

Thanks to Marie Lingblom, Director of the Woburn Senior Center, and Woburn Senior Center staff, including Michelle Daly, Transportation Coordinator, for organizing delivery routes, and Jack Foley, van driver, and Meghan Rodriguez, Outreach Worker, for working together to deliver nearly 80 meals to the homes of local seniors.

Thanks also to Len Burnham, Deputy Superintendent of Public Works for arranging the pick-up of both the chicken and apple pies and set up of the delivery area for the dinners, Nathan Crawford for all his hard work cleaning up after the workers inside City Hall, and Paul Medeiros and Joe Daley for helping with City Hall parking lot logistics and setup.

Finally, thank you to the Woburn Police Department, Woburn City Council Members, Woburn School Committee Members, Woburn Elks, Woburn Breakfast Lions, Woburn Host Lions, Middlesex Lions, City employees and resident volunteers, who all helped to make this event a great success.
