Beloved Worcester State Student Athlete Dies After Battle With Cancer
Evan Armit was 23 years old.
WORCESTER, MA — A student athlete at a nearby college has died after a courageous battle with cancer.
Evan Armit, a men's ice hockey student athlete at Worcester State University, died on Monday. The 23-year-old battled metastatic melanoma, a type of skin cancer that spreads to other parts of the body.
“Evan was an incredible student-athlete and beloved teammate. He will be greatly missed by our entire campus community,” said Michael Mudd, WSU's athletic director. “Our thoughts are with the Armit family at this difficult time."

Armit was in his second year on the ice hockey team and pursuing a degree in Business Administration, according to a news release from the school.
In addition to his time playing at WSU, he played with the Winnipeg Freeze and the Islanders Hockey Club.

“He carried himself with quiet strength and treated everyone with kindness, never losing sight of the importance of family and friendship," said Jay Punsky, WSU's head coach. "His joy was infectious, and his spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Though his time with us was far too brief, Evan leaves behind a legacy of heart, humility, and purpose.”
Information about services to celebrate his life will be announced in the coming days, according to the release.
