Bicyclist Hit By Car Suffers Head Injury: Worcester Police

The bicyclist apparently did not brake while going through the intersection, and the SUV had a green light.

WORCESTER, MA—A woman suffered injuries when the bike she rode collided with an SUV on Chandler and Queen streets in Worcester on Friday night.

Around 9:34 p.m. on June 15, police were called to the intersection of Chandler and Queen streets where the collision had just happened. They found a 21-year-old female bicyclist suffering from a head injury being treated by the Worcester Fire Department and EMS. The WPD Crash Reconstruction Unit was called in because of the serious nature of the crash.

Investigators found that she was pedaling north on Queen Street and got to the Chandler Street intersection without slowing down. A 2003 Nissan Xterra, driven by a 57-year-old male, was headed west on Chandler when the bike collided with the driver's side rear door.

Witnesses that were interviewed at the scene stated that the Nissan had the green light.

The bicyclist got a large cut on her head and may have received additional head injuries. She was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Recon investigators believe that the bike that the female was operating may have had poor or faulty brakes. Witnesses stated that the female did not slow down or brake as she traveled down Queen Street and entered the intersection. The Nissan was traveling in the lane closest to the solid center line.
