WORCESTER, MA — The Worcester Beer Garden will reopen Friday for the season after remaining dormant over the winter.

The garden, which first opened in 2018, had been operating seasonally for years along Franklin Street. The owners in February 2023 made the decision to keep the garden open year-round, adding heat lamps and other outdoor amenities for the winter months.

But the owners decided to shut down over the winter after a difficult 2023, Grid Management vice president Joseph Donovan told MassLive in January. Frequent rainy days and fewer workers downtown contributed to the seasonal closure, and the city also temporarily suspended the garden's liquor license after a gap in crowd management checks due to the loss of a general manager.

The Worcester Beer Garden typically offers a large menu of craft beer and cider from local breweries including Building 8, Redemption Rock, Start Line, Wormtown, and Greater Good paired with pub food.

The beer garden will also have some new competition in 2024. Salem's Notch Brewery on Tuesday will open its beer garden at the Mercantile Center, taking over for a garden previously manned by Harpoon.
