Worcester Restaurant Receives $34K To Address Food Insecurity

The eatery was one of 31 in the state awarded funding.

WORCESTER, MA — A restaurant in Worcester was just one of 31 places that recieved grants to prepare and supply food for those in need.

MassDevelopment announced $900,000 in grants from the Food Insecurity Grant Program for Independent Restaurants. Tembo Grill in Worcester recieved $34,550 of that money.

The program awarded grants ranging from $7,000 to $45,000 for restaurants to make and give food for free to banks, pantries, senior centers, schools and emegrnecy food disribution centers.

“Massachusetts is fortunate to be home to many local restaurants that create jobs and vibrancy in our communities, "said MassDevelopment President and CEO Navjeet Bal in a news release. "And this program is creating a new source of revenue to help them stay competitive while also seeking to address food insecurity statewide."

Tembo Grill, located at 1105 West Boylston St., serves East African cuisine. Some other locations that recieved money were Chair City Diner in Gardner, Firebox in Weston and Italian Kitchen in Brockton.
