2 Dead, 1 Survivor After Canoe Capsizes In Upper Peninsula: Sheriff

Officials did not release the victims' names.

COPPER HARBOR, MI — Two people are dead after a canoe capsized in Lake Superior over the weekend, according to the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident happened early Saturday monring when a canoe with three people aboard overturned in Lake Superior at Copper Harbor, officials said.

Officials said one person was able to swim to shore at 3:50 a.m. and alert authorities. Rescue crews began searching and found one body later Saturday, officials said.

The second missing person’s body was recovered on Sunday, officials said.

Officials did not release the victims' names.

"Our deepest condolences go out to the families, friends, and loved ones affected by this tragic event. We ask that their privacy be respected during this incredibly difficult time," the sheriff's office said in the Facebook post.

Copper Harbor is the northernmost part of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula in the U.P. It sits along Lake Superior, across Isle Royale National Park.
