Two northern Michigan campgrounds are among the top ten in the Midwest, according to a popular camping website.

MICHIGAN — Two Michigan campgrounds are among the best places to camp in the Midwest, according to a popular camping website.

The Dyrt, a site that provides resources for campers, said the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Backcountry Sites in Munising and the Northern Exposure Campground and RV Park in Mesick are among to two best in the Midwest.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Backcountry Sites was placed No. 5 on list. The website said the campground offers towering sandstone cliffs, pristine beaches and dense forests. There is also the North Country Trail, which connects most of the campgrounds, according to The Dyrt.

"Great hike. First backpacking trip with my youngest son. We hiked around Beaver lake and along Lake Superior. We camped at Lowney crip and Beaver Creek. Enjoyed both sites. Of course Beaver Creek provide the better views sitting above Lake Superior," a Dyrt reviewer wrote.

Northern Exposure Campground and RV Park was placed just behind Pictured Rocks at No. 6. The campground, which has 220 RV sites, offers 300 wooded acres and stretches along two and a half miles of shoreline on Hodenpyle Pond in Mesick

The website said the campground is a family-friendly site that offers campers several amenities, including hot showers, 50-amp service, a camp store and a pizzeria.

"Great Campground. First time going there was amazing. Staff was friendly. Campground was quiet and everyone who was around us was super nice and friendly," a Dyrt reviewer wrote.

To determine the ranking, the Dyrt looked at reviews and ratings from the site’s community of campers.

"Some of these locations are up in the mountains, others are on islands in the South," says Sarah Smith, founder of The Dyrt. "We have campgrounds with zero amenities that certain vehicles can’t reach and we have campgrounds that are in vineyards or on berry farms. That’s why so many people love camping, because you can make it exactly what you want it to be."
