8 Inches Of Snow Possible In Detroit Area In Weekend Storm: MI Weather

Periods of heavy snow are expected across southeastern Michigan through the weekend. What to know:

SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN — Just as we're digging out of Wednesday's storm, another weekend long winter weather system can bring up to 8 inches of fresh snow across southeastern Michigan, according to the National Weather Service.

The first round of snow is expected to move into southeastern Michigan on Friday night and continue overnight into Saturday morning, according to the weather service.

Freezing rain and sleet will briefly mix with the snow across metro Detroit areas south of Interstate 59 during the afternoon hours Saturday when temperatures slightly rise above freezing, according to the weather service.

The wintry mix then shifts back into a widespread snowmaker through the evening and nighttime hours Saturday, according to the weather service.

Most areas across southeastern Michigan will see between 3 and 4 inches of fresh snow by Saturday night, according to the weather service.

Areas south of interstate 94 toward the Ohio border will see slightly less snow, roughly 2 to 3 inches, according to the weather service.

It will continue snowing through Saturday night and the snowstorm will pick up in coverage and intensity during the overnight hours, according to the weather service.

Heavy snow will blanket most of southeastern Michigan through the first half of Sunday, dumping an additional 4 inches of fresh snow across much of the area, according to the weather service.

By Sunday night, forecasters expect a weekend total of more than 8 inches of fresh snow in areas north of Interstate 69, 4 to 7 inches of snow across metro Detroit areas between Interstate 69 and Interstate 94 and 2 to 4 inches of snow in areas south of Interstate 94 toward the Ohio border.

Any lingering remnants from the weekend snowstorm will move out of the area by Sunday night when temperatures fall into the teens with single digit wind chills, according to the weather service.

It will only get colder from there as highs will be in the teens and lows will fall into the single digits with below zero chills overnight early next week, according to the weather service.
