Amtrak Train Hits Truck, Derails In Southwest MI: Officials

There was no one inside the truck at the time of the crash and there were no serious injuries​ in the train derailment, officials said.

BARRIEN COUNTY, MI — An Amtrak train derailed Thursday night in southwest Michigan after striking a truck that was blocking the tracks, officials said.

The Wolverine Train 355 was traveling west from Pontiac to Chicago with roughly 218 people and six crew members on board at 10 p.m. when it hit the truck at Lakeside Road and US-12 in New Buffalo, officials said.

The impact of the crash caused the train to derail, but the train did not fall over, officials said.

Amtrak said in a statement it is working closely with authorities and has deployed personnel to the scene.
