Family Members ID Navy Vet As MI Church Shooting Victim

He was described by family members as a "loving husband, father and grandfather."

GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, MI — A 77-year-old Navy veteran has been identified as one of four people killed in an attack at Grand Blanc Township church.

John Bond was described by family members as a "loving husband, father and grandfather" on a Gofundme page.

"John was a Navy veteran serving for 9 years, a lover of golf and trains and always loved spending time with his family and grandkids," family members said in the verified post, which had raised more than $19,000 as of Tuesday afternoon.

The Vietnam veteran was also well known and active in his community, family members said.

Funds raised through the page will pay for his memorial service and go to his widow, Joanne Bond, "to ease the navigation of this heartbreaking time," family members said.

Officials said 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, from Burton, drove his pickup truck through the front doors of the church and started shooting with an assault rifle. They also believe he used gasoline to start the fire, which destroyed much of the church.

Officers arrived within minutes and fatally shot Sanford in the parking lot behind the church, officials said.

Three others were killed and eight people were injured in the attack, officials said.

Officials have not identified the victims, but said they have all been accounted for. Their ages range between 6 and 78, officials said.

Investigators were still searching for motive. They are investigating the attack as an act of "targeted violence."

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked anyone with information to call 1-800-CALL-FBI or go to tips.fbi.gov.
