Historic MI Bed And Breakfast Named Best In Nation: Ranking

A popular northern Michigan bed and breakfast spot has just been named the best in the nation.

A Newsweek ranking named the Laurium Manor Inn in Houghton County as the best historical bed and breakfast in the nation.

The 45-room mansion, located in Laurim, was built in 1908. The mansion still features its original furnishings, grand fireplaces, intricate woodwork, and stained glass windows.

"While patrons enjoy a full breakfast buffet, they'll be surrounded by rare details, such as a silver-leaf domed ceiling and elephant leather wall coverings, emphasizing the opulent nature of this 1900s home, which is now a partner of the Keweenaw National Historical Park," Newsweek said.

The Laurium Manor Inn wasn't the only historic Michigan bed and breakfast recognized in the ranking.

The Cartier Mansion Bed and Breakfast in Ludington came in at No. 2 in the ranking. Last year it was America's top-ranked historic bed and breakfast.

The Cartier Mansion Bed and Breakfast, located along East Ludington Avenue in Ludington, was built in 1905 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The mansion features mahogany, oak, cherry and walnut floors and decorations throughout the inside.

"An excellent example of the revival of neoclassical architecture in America," Newsweek said. "From crystal chandeliers and claw-foot bathtubs to ornate woodwork, the decor in each room offers a glimpse of the past alongside modern conveniences like keyless entry."
