Man Killed In Dirt Bike Crash Involving Train In Southeast MI: Sheriff

Police believe alcohol played a role in the crash.

ERIE TOWNSHIP, MI — A 31-year-old man was killed in a dirt bike crash involving a train over the weekend in southeastern Michigan, according to sheriff's officials.

The crash happened at 9:27 p.m. Saturday at the Norfolk Southern Railroad crossing on Sterns Road near Suder in Erie Township, officials said.

Officials said Jacob Buchele was riding an off-road red and blue 2022 Honda CRF-250 dirt bike west on Sterns Road. He then came to the Norfolk Southern Railroad crossing, where an oncoming train was moving north, officials said.

Officials said the railroad crossing gates, red flashing warning lights and warning bells were activated on the east and west sides of the tracks.

Buchele rode the dirt bike around the east-side gate and entered the tracks, officials said.

While trying to cross the tracks, officials said his dirt bike struck the right side of the train’s engine. He fell from his bike onto the tracks, officials said.

Officials said Buchele was killed in the crash. He was wearing a helmet and police believe alcohol played a role in the crash.
