MI Mom Charged With Murder Claimed Son 'Did Not Want To Turn 18': Police

HOLLAND, MI — A Michigan mom has been charged with murder in connection with the death of her 17-year-old son, according to police.

Officers found 17-year-old Austin Dean Pikaart stabbed to death at 4:15 a.m. Friday inside a home at the Bay Pointe Apartment Complex on 16th Street in Holland, according to police.

Katie Austin Lee, 39, was charged with open murder and one count of resisting and obstructing an officer. She was placed in jail and denied bond. Officials did not immediately schedule her next court date.

Lee called 911 and told police "she couldn’t get her son to stop breathing and had been trying for a while," according to a WoodTV report.

"She advised her son asked her to help him stop breathing because he did not want to turn 18," a detective told a judge in a probable cause hearing, according to the report.

Lee told officials that she and her son tried to commit suicide hours before she cut him with a knife in the throat and arm after he had passed out, according to the report.

When officers arrived at the apartment, Lee immediately confronted them while holding a knife, according to police.

Officers repeatedly told her to drop the knife, but she refused, and officers eventually Tasered her, according to police.

Officials did say Lee and her son lived inside the apartment together, according to police.
