CEDAR SPRINGS, MI — A Michigan mom, who officials say killed her 2-year-old daughter, is now being investigated in the death of her 2-month-old son, who died years ago.

Kent County Sheriff Michelle Lajoye-Young told reporters Monday that officers found 2-year-old Ryleigh Whitehead dead inside a home on South Allan Street in Cedar Springs on Sept. 3.

Officials initially determined her cause of death as "indeterminate," before they arrested Ryleigh's mom, 27-year-old Irene Whitehead, on Nov. 25. She was charged with felony murder and first-degree child abuse in the death of Ryleigh.

While talking to investigators, Lajoye-Young said Whitehead admitted to killing her 2-month-old son, Leo, in 2021, as well as Ryleigh.

"She identified a number of similarities with the manner of their death in her statement, but more specifically she stated that she had killed both Riley and Leo," Sheriff Michelle Lajoye-Young said.

Officials initially determined Leo's death to be caused by parainfluenza, and didn't suspect any foul play at that time.

But after Whitehead's statements, Lajoye-Young said her office is investigating Leo's death as a homicide and asking for tips from the public as they pursue charges.

"I believe we will get to a point where we are asking for charges on Leo's case," Lajoye-Young said. "I need help from the community to get it vetted."

Police are also looking in possible child abuse against Whitehead's other two children, ages 5 and 7. Those kids were each placed in the custody of their natural father, Lajoye-Young said.

Whitehead has been placed in jail without bond. Her next court date is scheduled for Dec. 10.
