Officers fatally shot a 59-year-old man after a manhunt Sunday in west Michigan, according to Michigan State Police.

MEARS, MI — Officers fatally shot a 59-year-old man after a manhunt Sunday in west Michigan, according to Michigan State Police.

Don Albert Stapel Jr. was fatally shot by officers at 6:40 p.m. in a wooded area near the 7500 block of Fox Road in Mears, according to police.

Police issued a shelter-in-place order for those living in the area after learning Stapel, who was armed, may be in the woods, according to police.

Officers eventually found Stapel in an outbuilding where he was shot to death, according to police.

The pursuit began Sunday after troopers said Stapel shot another in the leg, according to a 13 ON YOUR SIDE report.

Police did not release any other details about the pursuit.

Police were still investigating the shooting.
