Bradford James Gille, 42, of Afton, was charged with one count of felony terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder. He was placed in jail with a $100,000 bond. He pleaded not guilty and is expected back in court on Aug. 6.

The attack happened at 4:45 p.m. Saturday at the store in Garfield Township, which is just outside Traverse City, police said.

Police said Gille, acting alone, entered the store and used a 3.5-inch folding knife to stab 11 people. Police said he was at the store for about 30 minutes before he began randomly stabbing people with the blade.

By the time officers arrived at the store, civilians — one of whom was armed with a pistol — stopped Gille in the parking lot and kept him from leaving or hurting anyone else, police said.

A motive for the attack was still unknown.
