Northern Lights Possible Across MI Friday: What To Know

Michiganders in some parts of the state may be able to see the Northern Lights on Friday night.

MICHIGAN — Michiganders in some parts of the state may be able to see the Northern Lights on Friday night, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The agency expects a coronal mass ejection, which is a large expulsion of plasma and magnetic field from the sun’s atmosphere. When those particles collide with the Earth’s atmosphere, they create the northern lights, or aurora borealis.

While those in northern Michigan will be the best chance to see the dazzling display, the spectacle could reach down into lower Michigan.
