Police Fatally Shoot Knife-Wielding Man Along MI Highway: Sheriff

Police said the man was "non-compliant​" and pulled out multiple knives during an altercation with officers.

INGHAM COUNTY, MI — Officers fatally shot a man Sunday after he pulled out multiple knives during an altercation in Ingham County, according to county sheriff's officials.

The shooting happened at 4 p.m. on US 127 near Barnes Road, in Vevay Township, which is roughly 30 miles south of Lansing, officials said.

A driver called 911 and told officers that a man was walking against traffic on the roadway, officials said.

When officers arrived at the scene, they said the man was "non-compliant" and pulled out multiple knives, officials said.

"De-escalation efforts continued for several minutes. During this intervention, the man was shot by police personnel," officials said.

Officials performed life-saving efforts, but were unsuccessful and the man died, officials said.

An officer was injured during the altercation, although officials did not immediately say how.

Officials did say there is no ongoing threat to the community and that they are in the process of notifying the man’s family.

Officials also addressed a social media video that captured the incident.

"We are aware of a video of this event that has surfaced on social media," sheriff officials said. "A citizen can be heard in the video stating, ‘he’s got handcuffs on.’ We can confirm that the individual was not handcuffed when officers confronted him; he was armed with multiple knives."

Officials said Michigan State Police will be investigating the shooting.
